The premise
A married man working from home discovers that his wife's old college friend, now staying with them for a week after a break-up, is someone he recognises from her former career. The wife cheerfully outs him as an admirer and heads off to work. The guest lets slip that retirement may not be permanent, and that they will have the house to themselves all day.
How it is built
Episode one is almost entirely the husband's mortified double-take; episode two has the guest questioning him about his marriage and bringing up an evening when husband and wife sat through her old films together, before she makes her proposal. Both of those are free, and the free half closes as she takes the lead. The three locked episodes are 30 tokens each, 90 to finish.
Who it is for
Viewers who enjoy a former star who knows exactly why she has been recognised, and who like a flustered straight man opposite a relaxed lead. If that joke means nothing to you, My Stepmom's Weekend tells a more conventional story at the same price.
What works
- Relaxed, funny lead against a genuinely panicked husband
- Dialogue that plays with the guest's past and mostly gets away with it
- A plain, accurate poster built on two contrasting faces
What does not
- The second episode skips the slow build and heads straight for the offer
- So much rests on her former fame that 90 tokens is a lot to ask if the joke does not work for you
